According to the notification released by the UPSC in February 2023 (UPSC Notification), two separate exams will be conducted for the positions of APFC (Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner) and EO/AO (Enforcement Officer/Accounts Officer) for the Employee Provident Fund Organization (EPFO). The UPSC has not released any exam date in its notification.
Can we infer the exam dates of UPSC EPFO from UPSC Calendar?
The UPSC releases an annual calendar for its exams, every year.
This calendar includes the exam dates for regular exams like NDA, CDA, Civil Services, Engineering Services, Medical Services, and CAPF/CISF. It also marks the dates for Recruitment Test (RT) exams, which include exams for Admin Officer, Store Officer, APFC, ALC, ESIC DD, CSD Manager, EPFO EO/AO, Drug Inspector, Assistant Director, and others. The annual Calendars can be downloaded from 2023 Calendar , 2022 Calendar , 2021 Calendar.
The UPSC EPFO is also a RT exam. If we want to predict the exam dates for APFC and EO/AO exams for EPFO, we can refer to the reserved dates for RT exams in the UPSC calendar.
However, the question remains whether the UPSC follows its own calendar while deciding the exam dates for RT exams. To answer this question, we can look at some ongoing or concluded RT exams and check if their exam dates were marked in the UPSC calendar.

From this analysis, it appears that the UPSC does not follow the reserved dates in the calendar when deciding on the exam dates for RT exams. In fact, none of the RT exams were conducted on their reserved date in the calendar during last 10 months. While regular exams such as NDA, CDA, Civil Services, and IES are conducted on calendar dates, RT exams are not bound by the calendar dates. The RT exams can be conducted any time.
Thus we conclude that, we can not infer the exam dates of UPSC EPFO from the annual UPSC Calendar. The probability of EPFO exam being held on a Reserved Date is same as the probability of EPFO exam being held on any other date.

Thus, while the UPSC Calendar is often eagerly awaited by candidates, it is of no use when it comes to predicting the exact exam date for UPSC EPFO exams. So, if we can’t rely on the UPSC Calendar, how can we predict exam dates and accordingly plan our preparation?
To answer this question, let us look at the historic data of exam dates of previous UPSC exams. By analyzing this data, we can get a better sense of the approximate gap between the date of notification and the date of the exam, and thus infer how much time we will have for exam preparation.

Based on above analysis of multiple UPSC RT exams over the past few years, the minimum duration between the notification and exam is 5 months, while the maximum duration is around 12 months (by excluding outliers).
With this information, we can conclude that we should get at least 5-6 months for preparation of UPSC EPFO exams. This timeframe is the minimum amount of time we can expect, but it is possible that the UPSC may provide us with more time.
The notification for the UPSC EPFO exam was released in Feb-Mar 2023. Therefore, according to our analysis, it is unlikely that the exam will take place before August-September 2023. However, the exam can happen anytime after August-September 2023, and this is the minimum timeframe we should expect.
It is important to note that this analysis is based on historic data and should be used as a rough estimate. The UPSC may change its schedule at any time, and it is impossible to predict the exact exam date.
What do we conclude about exam dates of UPSC EPFO?
According to above analysis, we can deduce that we will have at least 5-6 months to prepare for the UPSC EPFO exams. Therefore, it is recommended that we plan to cover the entire syllabus in approximately 4.5 months, allowing ample time for revision and mock tests before the exam.
It is suggested that we complete the syllabus no later than July 15th, 2023, in order to be fully prepared for the exam. While the exam date for UPSC EPFOis uncertain, we can ensure that we are well-prepared by completing our syllabus in advance.

You should be looking for these 5 points, while evaluating any institute:
1. Teaching or Gyan
Check if you are getting just 30,000 feet overview or detailed conceptual learning. If you have attended a 2-hour class on “Motivation Theories”, do you have the confidence to tackle every possible question on this topic? Also, check how much time is spent on actual teaching and how much on “motivating you to like videos” or “promoting their courses”.
2. Mentorship
Are you joining a team, which can guide you throughout your preparation journey? Give a call and ask for a discussion with a faculty member. Ask that faculty some real questions, like:
- Is XYZ Act part of the syllabus?
- Do I have to study new labour codes?
- What has been the trend of cut-offs?
- Which topics can I ignore or focus on more?
- Which topics in the syllabus have relevance to current affairs?
Assess the quality of telephonic discussion. See if you are getting connected to a “sales guy” or an “academic mentor and guide”.
3. Interaction in Class
Check if students are able to ask doubts in the class by speaking/discussing or you have been given just a chat option. Attend a few demo classes to understand this.
4. Study Material
No exam can be cleared by just listening to what the teacher says. After every class, it is mandatory to read that topic from the books. Check whether you are getting study material covering all the keywords of the syllabus. Most of the time, you will be getting random PDF files or pdf of class notes. Check if you are getting this confidence that you don’t have to look at any other book.
5. Previous Results
Check previous results of the institute.
From a coverage point of view, the Study Material will give you 100% coverage, but the probability of selection is much higher (4 times) in video classes program, because of the following reasons:
(i) a Large number of topics require conceptual clarity, which will need a teacher to make it easier, like Accounting, Labour Laws, Numerical Aptitude.
(iii) If it takes x hours to prepare without a teacher, then it will take only 0.4x hours with a teacher. Since time for UPSC EPFO exam is limited, you need someone to make it quicker for you.
(iv) You get into discipline because now someone else is pushing you towards completion of the syllabus (this is the biggest contributor)
(v) While teaching, the teacher explains how questions are framed from a given topic.
