Frequency of the Exam

The UGC NET in Human Resource Management (HRM) examination is held twice every year, typically in the months of June and December. It’s a significant opportunity for those aspiring to secure assistant professorships or junior research fellowships (JRF).

Structure of the Exam

This examination comprises two papers, each serving a distinct purpose. Paper 1 evaluates candidates’ teaching and research skills in a broader context, while Paper 2 delves into specific topics such as HR, organizational behavior, labour laws, and industrial relations.

Paper 2: HRM Knowledge

When we dissect Paper 2’s syllabus, we find six essential areas covering various aspects of business management and related subjects, including:

5. Labour Welfare
6. Labour Market

Paper 1: General Aptitude

On the other hand, Paper 1 encompasses ten units focusing on different aspects necessary for effective teaching and research roles. These include:

Exam Duration and Question Breakdown

Candidates are allotted a total of three hours to complete both papers without any breaks. Paper 1 consists of 50 questions, while Paper 2 contains 100 questions. Each question carries a value of two marks, resulting in a maximum achievable score of 300.

No Negative Marking

A noteworthy aspect of this examination is the absence of negative marking. This means candidates can attempt all questions without the fear of losing marks for incorrect answers.

Qualification Criteria

To qualify for the UGC NET in HRM, candidates must score a minimum of 40% for the Unreserved category and 35% for other categories in both Paper 1 and Paper 2. Successful candidates open doors to opportunities in Assistant Professorship, with the top 6% also becoming eligible for Junior Research Fellowships (JRF).

Evolution of Exam Format

The format of the UGC NET examination has evolved over the years to adapt to changing needs. Initially conducted in a pen-and-paper mode until June 2019, it transitioned to an online Computer-Based Testing (CBT) mode from 2019 to December 2023. However, in April 2024, the UGC reverted back to an OMR-based format starting from June 2024. These modifications aim to ensure a fair and effective evaluation process while keeping pace with technological advancements.
