Cut off Analysis

To clear the exam, we need to understand how the cut-off pattern has been in the previous years. This will help us in deciding upon a score that should be achieved to secure a seat in JRF.

Let’s refer to the numbers below:

Dec 2018 exam

  • Unreserved: 62% (JRF) & 54% (NET)
  • OBC: 58% (JRF) & 49% (NET)
  • SC: 54% (JRF) & 47% (NET)
  • ST: 54% (JRF) & 46% (NET)

June 2019 exam

  • Unreserved: 68% (JRF) & 60% (NET)
  • OBC: 63% (JRF) & 53% (NET)
  • SC: 60% (JRF) & 50% (NET)
  • ST: 57% (JRF) & 48% (NET)

Dec 2019 exam

  • Unreserved: 62% (JRF) & 55% (NET)
  • OBC: 58% (JRF) & 50% (NET)
  • SC: 56% (JRF) & 48% (NET)
  • ST: 54% (JRF) & 47% (NET)

The cut-off for the year 2020 and 2021 hasn’t been disclosed by the NTA because more than 1 lakh candidates appeared for the exam. This led to the exam being held in multiple shifts.  Because of the possibility of the differences in the difficulty level of the paper in multiple shifts, the NTA decided to normalize the score of each paper and accordingly created a percentile on the basis of the score. Thus, for the Commerce subject of UGC NET, after 2020, only percentile scores are declared and percentage scores are not declared.

June 2020 Exam (held on 17 Oct 2020)

  • Unreserved: 99.45 (JRF) & 97.29 (NET)
  • OBC: 98.61 (JRF) & 90.47 (NET)
  • SC: 95.03 (JRF) & 82.78 (NET)

Dec 2020 and June 2021 combined (held on 25-26 Nov 2021)

  • Unreserved: 99.4 (JRF) & 97.2 (NET)
  • EWS: 98.6 (JRF) & 93.0 (NET)
  • OBC: 97.5 (JRF) & 90.0 (NET)
  • SC: 95.0 (JRF) & 82.7 (NET)

Unfortunately, we cannot learn much from percentile scores about the expected cut off. We need percentage scores.

Based on the above numbers, we can safely conclude that, if we are aspiring for a JRF seat, then we should be targeting a score of around 70% in both Paper 1 + Paper 2.  If you are dreaming for only NET (Assistant Professor), then the cut off is likely to be lower by 5 to 7 percentage points from the cut off of JRF.

Importance of Paper 1

Now that we have agreed that we need a score of around 70% in UGC NET in Commerce, how can we achieve this?

First thing, we should not underestimate the importance of Paper 1. If we are not putting up a score of around 40 out of 50 in Paper 1, we are not doing a good job. Some of us might think that scoring 30-32 (out of 50) in paper 1 is good, because it translates to 60-65%. But this is not true. There are 2 reasons, why we advise you to get around 40 correct in Paper 1 out of 50:

Reason 1: Achieving 40/50 marks in paper 1 is achievable as the difficulty level is less than paper 2. For example, you need to increase 1 mark more, then it’s much easier to do that in paper 1 as compared to paper 2 of UGC NET in Commerce. Thus, ROI of efforts is much higher in Paper 1. If you get X hours of preparation to get one incremental mark in Paper 1, then you need 3X efforts to get one incremental mark in Paper 2 of Commerce subject.

Reason 2: Thousands of students have cracked UGC NET with Human Peritus over the last 10 years. One trend, which we consistently see among these success stories, is that all of them score above average in Paper 1. Check out interviews of some of them in the videos below.

Which topics are more important

At Human Peritus, we analysed, topic wise distribution of previous papers of UGC NET in Commerce.

Now, let us compare the distribution of the questions from the different topics in June 2019 and Dec 2019.

For example, consider the following changes:

  • The questions for Marketing Management changed from being 9 to 14.
  • The questions for Business Environment & IB changed from being 14 to 11.
  • The questions for Legal Aspects changed from being 8 to 12.

Similarly, there is a difference in question distribution between Dec 2019 and June 2020. Even in the morning and evening shifts of the same day (held on 17 Oct 2020), there was a difference in question distribution of the various topics in the exam.

So, what do we learn from all these facts and numbers?

NOTHING IS MORE OR LESS IMPORTANT. The weightage of topics will keep changing in the exam. You need to cover 100% of the syllabus and there is no such option to be following some short-cuts. There is no way you can predict the number of questions from any topic, this will only lead to failure.

We advise you to do an activity by yourself. Go to YouTube and try to search for the keyword – UGC NET Commerce Important Questions. You will find many people who have posted 10 most important, 100 most important questions. Now, compare these questions with the actual questions that ended up coming in the exam. You will yourself realize that things don’t work like this and the only way to ensure JRF is to cover 100% syllabus.

This will help you understand that there are no shortcuts, important questions, and magic tricks to have it all easy.

Difficulty level of questions

We, at Human Peritus, have been analysing UGC NET Papers over the last 10 years. The difficulty level of the paper has increased since year 2019. Till 2019, the exam was conducted by the UGC and then by the CBSE. Majority of the questions were keyword-based. You just need to understand basic meaning of all keywords of the syllabus and it was sufficient.

But after 2019, since the exam has been taken over by the NTA, the difficulty level has increased. Now the questions are more conceptual in nature, and you need a deeper understanding of topics.

Also, in every paper, you would find that 5-10 questions would be of easy level, 80-85 questions would be of moderate level and 8-10 of tough levels. Students generally worry about 8-10 tougher questions, rather than focusing on why they could not score well in the remaining 90 questions. The success comes by ensuring performance in these 90 questions and not in 10 tougher ones.

You must understand that these 8-10 tough questions aren’t the reason for your failure, you failed because you couldn’t do the easy and moderate ones.

Your success for a JRF seat in Commerce is determined by these 90 easy and moderate questions. By relying on the traditional method of studying each keyword, you would lead to success for sure.

Note the following points:-

  • Paper is usually within the syllabus.
  • You don’t have to worry about the tough questions.
  • Studying easy and moderate questions is more than enough to ace the JRF/NET exam.

How to Start Preparation

Rather than depending upon the books, we need to adopt a keyword-based approach of covering the syllabus. You can do the following activity instead:-

1. Take out the complete syllabus of the UGC NET Commerce Code – 08.

2. Pick one keyword at one time and try to find out the content for the same from different resources.

3. You can explore the content from websites, textbooks, and whatever other resources you might have.

4. Make sure you don’t leave behind any keyword from the syllabus. Go through all keywords, one-by-one.

Once you are done with the syllabus thoroughly, you should move on to practicing questions, targeting previous year papers as well as mock tests. This will give you the same feeling as the exam day, which will help you learn time management, allowing you to perform better on the big day.

We suggest you stop believing in crash courses because they mean that you would be leaving out something to get the syllabus done in a small amount of time, which will eventually lead to failure in the exam. You must cover everything.
